Au Revoir Simone

Brooklyn’s Au Revoir Simone make twinkly vocal-harmony synth-pop that will make you feel all fuzzy inside.

It’s music for the winter. For when it’s cold outside and you’re driving late at night. Get ready to fall in love.

Annie from the band has picked out her own top 5 tracks for us – check her choices below…

1 – Unknown Mortal Orchestra – “FFunny FFriends.”

This one is tied with “How Can You Luv Me.”  No, actually, it’s tied with the whole album.  This blends all my favorite things: psych rock, a great beat, good lyrics, and distorted vocals.

2 – Lata Mangeshkar – “Bahon Mein Chale Aao.”

I went deep into a Lata Mangeshkar hole this winter.  She was pretty much the only thing I listened to.  And she recorded a lot of music.  She was the voice of what seems like almost all Bollywood singing scenes for 30 years or something!  Can you even imagine being that prolific?  And of all the secular songs of hers I heard, I like this one the best.

3 – Modest Mouse – “Trucker’s Atlas.”

I have to admit, I get Lonesome Crowded West  and A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing to Think About mixed up because I had them recorded in a row on a 90-minute cassette, complete with half a song on the end of one side, starting up again on the other.  So it’s hard to pick a favorite song from this big mish-mash in my head, but this one is pretty great.  I love the rolling feeling of the drums and guitar, the raw energy and the way the lyrics are broken up across melody lines. Genius.

4 – Liz Phair – “Girls Girls Girls.”

This was one of Au Revoir Simone’s first cover songs in our early days.  I just love how deliberate and understated the delivery of these shocking lines is.

Girls! Girls! Girls! - Amateur

5 – Ramones – “Sheena Is A Punk Rocker.”

Even though I got so depressed watching the Ramones documentary, I still get exhilarated every time I hear this story of a gal breaking free of her suburban shackles and joining the counter culture.  It just rings so true to me.
